PASSING THE BATON: Rooney finally overtook Charlton's goals tally for England
SIR BOBBY CHARLTON has congratulated Wayne Rooney on becoming England's all-time leading goalscorer.
The Manchester United captain overtook Charlton's long-standing record with an 84th minute strike against Switzerland at Wembley tonight.
Rooney rifled home his 50th goal for his country from the spot, finally surpassing Charlton's haul of 49.
And moments after the game, Charlton admitted that he was disappointed to lose the record but pleased that it was Rooney who took it off him.

Charlton said: "I would like to congratulate Wayne on becoming England's leading goalscorer.
"I have always been very proud to hold this record. Playing for my country was always an honour and a privilege and something I did with great pride.
"I obviously cannot deny that I am disappointed that I now don't hold this record, however, I am absolutely delighted that it is Wayne, as captain of my beloved club and country, who now holds this record.
